Brussels is the capital of Belgium and the seat of the main institutions of the European Union and of NATO. Its old centre grew around the Grand-Place, a square of gilded guild houses and a Gothic town hall that the guilds rebuilt after a French bombardment in 1695. The city speaks French and Dutch side by side, and it is known for its comic strips, its chocolate, its fries and the little bronze Manneken Pis.
