What there is to do

The real Salerno

Wander among about 1,000 buildings rebuilt in 3D from OpenStreetMap, mapped as whole blocks, in a first piece of the centre with the sea in front. More of the city is to come.

Between the sea and the hills

Visit the Duomo of San Matteo, wind through the medieval lanes of Via dei Mercanti, ride the Corso past the Villa Comunale and the Teatro Verdi, and out to Zaha Hadid’s ferry terminal on the Molo Manfredi.

A race: Duomo and Lungomare

Race from below the Duomo through Via dei Mercanti and along the Corso, down to the sea, under the palms of the Lungomare and back along Via Roma.

This is Salerno

Salerno lies on its own gulf in Campania, in the south of Italy, where the Amalfi Coast ends and the plain of Paestum begins. A Lombard capital and the home of the first medical school of medieval Europe, it climbs from a palm-lined seafront up through a medieval old town to the castle on the hill. Every winter its streets glow with the Luci d’Artista.

  • The Duomo, the Norman cathedral over the tomb of Saint Matthew
  • The Scuola Medica Salernitana, the first medical school of medieval Europe
  • The Lungomare, the seafront promenade looking out over the gulf
  • The Luci d’Artista, the light festival that fills the town every winter
  • The gateway to the Amalfi Coast, by boat from the Molo Manfredi
