Bruges is the capital of West Flanders, a small city of canals, brick houses and medieval churches in the north-west of Belgium. From the 13th to the 15th century it was one of the great trading cities of northern Europe; when its channel to the sea silted up, the money left and the city slept for centuries, which is why so much of its medieval centre survives. That centre is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
