From the 10th century doctors in Salerno taught medicine from Greek, Latin, Arabic and Jewish sources, and the town became known as the Hippocratic City. Women studied and taught there as well, the most famous of them Trotula, whose name a street of the old town still carries.

Its health rules in verse, the Regimen Sanitatis Salernitanum, were read all over Europe. The school was closed in 1811; its story is told in a small museum in the church of San Gregorio on Via dei Mercanti. Visit it in 3D ›
