Pont Saint-Bénezet

The bridge of the song “Sur le pont d’Avignon”, of which only four arches are left.

Legend says a shepherd boy, Bénezet, was told by angels to build a bridge across the Rhône, and lifted the first stone himself. Built in the 12th century, it was swept away by floods again and again, and was given up in the 17th century.

Four of its 22 arches still stand, ending in the middle of the river, with a little chapel on one of the piers.
