Mistral
The cold wind that sweeps down the Rhône valley, clearing the sky over Avignon.
The mistral is a strong, cold north wind that blows down the Rhône valley towards the Mediterranean, sometimes for days on end. A saying claims that “Avignon venteuse, sans vent venimeuse”: Avignon, windy, and without wind, poisonous.
It brings bright blue skies and clear air, and farmers in Provence plant rows of cypresses to break it.
