Avignon Festival
Festival d’Avignon
Every July the town becomes one great theatre, with plays in the palace courtyard and in every hall.
Jean Vilar founded the festival in 1947 with three plays in the courtyard of the Palais des Papes. It has become one of the largest theatre festivals in the world.
Alongside it runs the Off: well over a thousand shows in every chapel, cellar and school of the town, advertised on posters covering every wall.
