The Hunters in the Snow
Three tired hunters coming home over the snowy hill, the village below skating on the ice.
Three hunters and their dogs trudge down the hill past bare trees, with just one fox to show for the day. Below them the frozen ponds are full of skaters, curlers and children with spinning tops, under a cold grey-green sky.
It is one of a series of six paintings of the times of the year that the Antwerp merchant Niclaes Jongelinck ordered for his house; five survive, and three of them hang in Vienna. Stand before it in 3D ›
