Bathers at Asnières
Une Baignade, Asnières
Young workmen resting on the bank of the Seine on a hot day, the factory chimneys of Clichy behind them.
Seurat was 24 when he painted it, his first big picture, after dozens of small studies made on the spot. The Salon turned it down, and it was shown at the first Salon des Indépendants in 1884.
A few years later he went back to it and added small dots of pure colour here and there, in the boy's hat for one: the way of painting, pointillism, he went on to invent. Stand before it in 3D ›
