In August 1888 Van Gogh was waiting in Arles for his friend Paul Gauguin to come and stay in the Yellow House. To decorate Gauguin’s room he painted four pictures of sunflowers in a few days, working fast before the flowers wilted. This one, yellow on yellow, is one of the two he thought good enough to sign, on the vase.

He painted repeats of his sunflowers the next winter, now in Amsterdam, Philadelphia and Tokyo. The National Gallery bought this one in 1924. Stand before it in 3D ›
