The Arnolfini Portrait
An Italian merchant and his wife in their room in Bruges, and Van Eyck himself in the mirror.
Giovanni Arnolfini, a merchant from Lucca, stands with his wife in their house in Bruges: an orange on the windowsill, a little dog at their feet, a brass chandelier with one candle burning in broad daylight.
In the round mirror on the back wall two more people stand in the doorway, one of them probably the painter. Over the mirror he wrote “Johannes de eyck fuit hic 1434”: Jan van Eyck was here. The National Gallery bought it in 1842. Stand before it in 3D ›
