The Monte dei Paschi di Siena was set up in 1472 to lend money to the poor at fair interest, and it has worked ever since, which makes it the oldest bank in the world. It has its seat in the Gothic Palazzo Salimbeni, at the back of this square on Banchi di Sopra.
Beside it stand the Renaissance Palazzo Spannocchi and the Palazzo Tantucci, and in the middle the statue of Sallustio Bandini, the Sienese priest who argued for free trade in the 18th century. Visit it in 3D ›
