Lijnbaan
Europe’s first shopping street built for people on foot, opened in 1953 in the rebuilt centre.
Van den Broek and Bakema designed the Lijnbaan as part of the plan to rebuild the bombed centre, and it opened in 1953: low shops along a street closed to cars, with canopies to walk under and flats behind.
It was the first street of its kind in Europe, and town planners came from all over the world to see it. It is still the main shopping street of Rotterdam. Visit it in 3D ›
