Venus of Urbino
Venere di Urbino
A young woman lying on a bed looks straight out at us, her little dog asleep at her feet, two maids at a chest behind.
Titian painted it for Guidobaldo della Rovere, soon Duke of Urbino, who called it simply the naked woman. The maids looking for her clothes in the chest and the sleeping dog make it a bedroom in Venice rather than a goddess's grove.
Mark Twain called it the vilest picture in the world; Manet answered it with his Olympia in 1863, the same pose, the same frank look. Stand before it in 3D ›
