The Annunciation
Annunciazione
The angel Gabriel kneels in a garden to tell the Virgin she will bear a son.
Leonardo painted it in his early twenties, still in the workshop of his master Verrocchio. Gabriel's wings were first painted after a real bird's; another hand made them longer later.
It came to the Uffizi in 1867 from a monastery near Florence, as a Ghirlandaio. Only in 1869 did critics recognise the young Leonardo in it. Stand before it in 3D ›
