The Triumph of Death
El triunfo de la Muerte
An army of skeletons sweeps across a burning land, sparing nobody, king or peasant.
Bruegel learnt from Bosch, and here the dead overrun the living: they herd people into a great coffin, ring a bell, cut a pilgrim's throat, empty the king's barrels of gold.
Only the two lovers in the corner, singing to a lute, have not noticed yet, and a skeleton plays along behind them. It has been in Spain since the 17th century and in the Prado since 1827. Stand before it in 3D ›
