The Garden of Earthly Delights
De Tuin der Lusten
Eden, a garden full of naked pleasure-seekers and giant fruit, and a hell of musical torture.
Three panels: on the left God presents Eve to Adam in Eden; in the middle hundreds of naked people play among giant strawberries, birds and fountains; on the right is a nightmare hell, where a man is crucified on a harp and a bird-headed monster swallows sinners. Closed, the wings show the world on the third day of creation, in grey.
Bosch painted it in ’s-Hertogenbosch, perhaps for the counts of Nassau in Brussels. King Philip II of Spain, who collected Bosch, sent it to his monastery-palace of El Escorial in 1593, and it has been in the Prado since 1939. Stand before it in 3D ›
