Saturn Devouring His Son
Saturno devorando a su hijo
The wild-eyed giant eating his child, one of the Black Paintings from the walls of Goya’s house.
In his seventies, deaf and disillusioned, Goya painted fourteen dark pictures straight onto the plaster walls of his house outside Madrid, the Quinta del Sordo. He gave them no titles and showed them to nobody. Saturn, the god who ate his children for fear one would overthrow him, hung in the dining room.
Fifty years later a new owner had them taken off the walls and moved onto canvas, and gave them to the Prado in 1881. Stand before it in 3D ›
