Baptistery

Battistero di San Giovanni

The octagonal baptistery with Ghiberti’s bronze doors, which Michelangelo called the Gates of Paradise.

The Baptistery of San Giovanni is one of the oldest buildings in the city, its striped marble octagon from the 11th century. Every Florentine was baptised here, Dante among them.

Its east doors, which Lorenzo Ghiberti spent 27 years casting in gilded bronze, show stories from the Old Testament in ten panels; Michelangelo is said to have called them fit to be the Gates of Paradise. The ones in place are copies.
