Hugo de Groot, Grotius, was born in Delft in 1583. A prodigy who went to university at eleven, he wrote On the Law of War and Peace in 1625, one of the founding books of international law.

Caught up in the religious quarrels of the Republic, he was locked up in Loevestein Castle in 1619 and escaped two years later in a chest that was meant for his books. He died in 1645 and lies buried in the Nieuwe Kerk; his statue has stood on the Markt since 1886. Visit it in 3D ›
