Trafalgar Square was laid out in the 1840s to remember Admiral Nelson’s victory at Trafalgar in 1805. Nelson stands on a column some 52 metres high, guarded by four bronze lions by Edwin Landseer.

Along its north side stands the National Gallery. Its fourth plinth, empty for over 150 years, now shows a changing work of contemporary art.
