Horse Guards was built in the 1750s as the entrance to the royal palaces. Two mounted troopers of the Household Cavalry stand guard at its gate on Whitehall from ten until four, in plumed helmets and shining breastplates.

Behind it, on Horse Guards Parade, the Trooping the Colour marks the King’s official birthday every June.
