On 13 August 1961 East Germany sealed off West Berlin with barbed wire and then a wall, 155 kilometres long, with a death strip behind it. It ran just west of the Brandenburg Gate.

On 9 November 1989 it fell. A double row of cobblestones now marks where it stood across the streets of the centre.
