On 10 May 1933 students and Nazi officials burned some 20,000 books on this square, works by Heinrich Heine, Thomas Mann and many others.

A glass pane in the paving looks down into Micha Ullman’s memorial, an underground room of empty white shelves with room for 20,000 books. Around the square stand the State Opera and St Hedwig’s Cathedral.
