La Fenice

Venice’s opera house, which has risen from its ashes more than once, as its name promises.

La Fenice, the phoenix, opened in 1792 and saw the first nights of operas by Rossini, Bellini and Verdi, among them La Traviata.

It burned down in 1836 and again, through arson, in 1996. Rebuilt as it was, it reopened in 2003.
