The popes ringed Avignon with walls in the 14th century, and they still stand almost whole: 4.3 kilometres of battlements and towers, with gates on the roads in.

Palais des PapesThe largest Gothic palace in the world, built when the popes lived in Avignon, from 1309 to 1377.
