Smørrebrød
Open sandwiches on dark rye bread, piled with herring, roast beef or shrimps.
Smørrebrød means butter and bread: a slice of dense rye bread, buttered and covered with toppings, pickled herring, egg and shrimps, liver pâté, roast beef with remoulade and crispy onions.
It is eaten with knife and fork at lunch, often with a cold beer and a glass of akvavit.
